Operation Breaking Dawn from the Palestinian Perspective

The Palestinian media, the PIJ, Hamas and Iran reported Operation Breaking Dawn as a success for the Gaza Strip. However, various elements in the Gaza Strip criticized the PIJ. On the other hand, the PIJ criticized Hamas for not taking an active part in the fighting.

An examination of the names of the fatalities in Operation Breaking Dawn reveals that about half of them were terrorist operatives

The ITIC examination into the identity of the 49 fatalities distinguished between 38 fatalities resulting from IDF strikes and 11 resulting from rocket misfires. Of the 38 fatalities from IDF strikes, 20 (52%) were identified as terrorist operatives, 12 (31%) were identified as operatives of the PIJ’s military wing, including the two senior operatives who were eliminated in targeted killings, one Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP) operative, four Hamas operatives and three Fatah operatives (it is unclear how involved the Hamas and Fatah operatives were involved in the military activity).

Escalation in the Gaza Strip – Summary of Operation Breaking Dawn (August 5-7, 2022)

After three days of rocket and mortar fire from the Gaza Strip and IDF attacks, the Egyptian negotiator, Israel and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) declared a ceasefire, which went into effect on August 7, 2022, at 23:30. During the three days of the operation 1,100 rockets were launched at Israel. During the operation the IDF carried out 170 attacks on PIJ terrorist targets. Among the targets were senior Jerusalem Brigades commanders.

Israeli-Palestinian Islamic Jihad escalation in the Gaza Strip: Operation Breaking Dawn

After a number of tense days in the Gaza Strip,. At 16:16 on Friday, August 5, 2022, the IDF killed Tayseer al-Jaabari, commander of the Jerusalem Brigades, the PIJ's military-terrorist wing in the northern Gaza Strip. A few hours after the targeted killing of al-Jaabari, the PIJ launched a massive barrage of rockets and mortar shells at Israel. Most of the attacks were directed at the Israeli cities and smaller communities on August 7, 2022, the morning of Tisha B'Avthe Jerusalem area as well.

The killing of Al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri – reactions and implications

On August 1, 2022, US President Joe Biden announced that the CIA had killed Al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri on July 31, 2022, by a UAV airstrike on the balcony of a house where he was staying with his family in Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan. Zawahiri, aged 71 when he was killed, had been Al-Qaeda leader since June 16, 2011, after succeeding Osama bin Laden . For Al-Qaeda, the killing of its leader mainly dealt a blow to the morale of its rank-and-file since Zawahiri, one of Al-Qaeda’s founders, had been a most outstanding symbol of the organization

Fatah summer campers in the Nablus district undergo military training

The Nablus branch of Fatah recently held summer camps for children and adolescents in the village of Bayta, south of the city. Videos of camp activities posted to the Palestinian social media showed the youth, some of them armed with rifles, undergoing military training. Apparently, the Fatah camp in Bayta was held because of the increasing participation of Fatah and its military-terrorist wing in the recent violent clashes between the Israeli security forces and Palestinians. Bayta was apparently not randomly chosen as the venue for the summer camps.
