Escalation in Israel’s South – Rocket Fire from the Gaza Strip Updated to 12:00 noon, May 11, 2021

The hostilities between Israel and the Palestinians in Jerusalem escalated to a new height on May 10, 2021, the day Israel celebrated Jerusalem Day. Hamas' military-terrorist wing issued an ultimatum to Israel, calling for the removal of Israel's security forces from the al-Aqsa mosque precinct and Sheikh Jarrah in east Jerusalem, and the release of all the Palestinian terrorists imprisoned in Israeli jails, by 18:00. When its conditions were not met, Hamas fired seven rockets at the Jerusalem region.

Palestinian responses to the International Criminal Court’s opening an investigation of Israel

The Palestinians were very pleased by International Criminal Court (ICC) Chief Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda's decision that the Court would investigate Israel on suspicion of having carried out war crimes. In Palestinian perspective, the decision was of historic proportions and a significant achievement in their struggle against Israel. The Palestinians credit the decision to the policies of Palestinian Authority (PA) chairman Mahmoud Abbas. Jibril Rajoub said Israel's era of being defended by Trump had ended.

Reaction of the Palestinian Authority to the International Criminal Court (ICC) Decision to Investigate Events in Judea, Samaria, east Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip

Senior Palestinian Authority (PA) figures expressed satisfaction with the majority ruling handed down by a panel of pre-trial ICC judges on February 5, 2021 regarding opening an investigation into the events in "Palestine." According to the ICC, "Palestine" is considered as a Rome Statue member state, including those territories occupied by Israel in 1967, and therefore the Court can investigate the so-called "crimes" allegedly carried out in the West Bank, east Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip.
