News of Terrorism and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict(August 11-17, 2010)

This past week two Qassam rockets and two mortar shells were fired into the western Negev. The various terrorist organizations continued their attempts to attack IDF forces. Various pro-Palestinian and pro-Hamas networks and organizations in the Arab countries and the West continue expressing their intentions to send flotillas to the Gaza Strip.

A network of former Fatah operatives in the Gaza Strip (Al-Ahrar) supported by Hamas announced the establishment of a military wing.

Flags of the US and Israel were set on fire during the announcement ceremonies, while a representative of the Turkish organization IHH congratulated the participants by a video call.

This past week there was quiet in the western Negev and along the Israeli-Lebanese border. Articles in Egypt’s establishment press strongly attacked Hamas, accusing it of responsibility for the rocket fire at Eilat. According to media reports the Lebanese women’s ship Mar Iam was supposed to set sail from Lebanon to Cyprus on August 8.

Turkish opposition newspaper quotes a Turkish jurist specializing in international law who strongly criticized the conduct of the organizers of the Mavi Marmara.

He claimed Israel contradicted international law, but the conduct of the Turkish organizers also violated it, giving Israel full legitimization for the forceful takeover of the ship.
