ISIS’s Sikh temple attack and its implications

On June 18, 2022, ISIS’s Khorasan Province carried out a combined attack on a Sikh temple in Kabul and a Taliban member were killed. According to ISIS’s claim of responsibility, the attack was carried out as an act of defense of the honor of Muhammad, and an act of vengeance against the “Sikh and Hindu infidels” due to offensive statements by senior officials in India’s ruling party against the Prophet of Islam. The attack on the Sikh temple is was intended to portray the organization as the “protector of Islam”

Spotlight on Global Jihad (June 16-22, 2022)

This week, most of ISIS’s activity was carried out in Syria, Sinai, Afghanistan and Africa. The Sinai Peninsula: The Egyptian army and the Sinai Tribal Union continued to mop up the region west of Rafah and the Sheikh Zuweid region from the presence of ISIS operatives. Syria: A Global Coalition force detained a senior ISIS official in Syria near the border with Turkey. Afghanistan: ISIS claimed responsibility for a combined attack on a Sikh temple in Kabul.

Spotlight on Global Jihad (June 8-15, 2022)

The relatively low level of ISIS activity around the world continued. Most of the activity focused on the Sinai Peninsula and Africa. This week, the Egyptian army and the Sinai Tribal Union continued to mop up the region west of Rafah and the Sheikh Zuweid region Syria: clashes between Kurdish SDF and ISIS forces resumed in Deir ez-Zor-Al-Mayadeen, Al-Hasakah and Al-Raqqah. Africa: ISIS continued to operate at relatively high intensity in Nigeria, Mozambique, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. At least 100 civilians were killed in northern Burkina Faso, near the border with Niger, apparently by elements affiliated with ISIS or Al-Qaeda.

Spotlight on Global Jihad (June 2-8, 2022)

Decrease in the volume of ISIS activity around the globe. As part of the lessons learned following the terrorist attacks in Beersheba and Hadera, the Israeli security forces will monitor dozens of Israeli Arabs convicted of supporting ISIS who are due to be released from prison in the near future. The Egyptian army and the Sinai Tribal Union continued to mop up the area west of Rafah and the Sheikh Zuweid India: Al-Qaeda is threatening to carry out suicide bombing attacks in light of statements by senior Indian government officials against the Prophet Muhammad.

Spotlight on Global Jihad (May 26 – June 1, 2022)

A moderate increase in the scope of ISIS activity around the globe. According to senior Turkish officials, ISIS leader was detained in a raid by Turkish counterterrorism forces in a house where he was hiding in Istanbul. The Egyptian security forces continued their counterterrorism efforts. Africa: Continued counterterrorism activity by the African Coalition forces against ISIS’s West Africa Province and Boko Haram in the Lake Chad region.
