Spotlight on Terrorism: Hezbollah, Lebanon and Syria (August 31- September 7, 2023)

This past week no incidents were reported along the Israel-Lebanon border. The UN Security Council renewed UNIFIL's mandate in south Lebanon, according to it which UNIFIL will act independently and not require prior approval to carry out its missions. Reactions in Lebanon were mixed .Amos Hochstein, senior advisor to President Biden, met with Abdullah Bou Habib, the Lebanese foreign minister, to discuss the possibility of further mediation for delineating the Lebanon-Israel land border. Nabih Berri, the speaker of the Lebanese Parliament, called for a week-long dialogue of all the parties, which would culminate in the election of a president; Hezbollah's opponents rejected the initiative. The Lebanese are concerned about the possible renewal of Syrian refugees' entering Lebanon. A Free Lebanese Forces activist called on Christians to purchase property in the Beqa'a Valley region to stop "Iranian expansion. "Hezbollah condemned the developing diplomatic relations between Israel and Bahrain.

Spotlight on Global Jihad (August 31-September 6, 2023)

This week, there was a decline in the scope of ISIS’s activity around the world. Most of the organization’s activity focused on Africa. In the rebel enclave in Idlib, clashes intensified between the Syrian army and the rebel organizations led by the Al-Qaeda-affiliated HTS. ISIS operatives in Deir ez-Zor threatened the Kurdish SDF forces and the Syrian army that they would liberate their operatives and their families detained in the Al-Hol camp. In Nigeria ISIS continued to attack the Nigerian army in Borno State, in the northeast of the country. In Somalia: Operatives of the Al-Qaeda-affiliated Al-Shabaab continued their attacks against Somalia’s security forces. The Somali army, alongside its regional partners and the US army, continued its activity against the organization. Al-Shabaab reportedly sustained around 200 fatalities.

Spotlight on Terrorism: Hezbollah, Lebanon and Syria (August 25-31, 2023)

This past week no exceptional incidents were reported along the Israel-Lebanon border. Ali Hamia, the Lebanese minister of public works and transportation, who participated in a ceremony launching a road-paving project, made menacing statements towards Israel. Hassan Nasrallah, Hezbollah secretary general, gave a speech to mark the anniversary of the "victory over ISIS" in Syria. He warned Israel against targeted killings in Lebanon and supported the Lebanese government's position on the renewal of the UNIFIL mandate. Amos Hochstein, an advisor to the president of the United arrived in Lebanon for a visit. In Baalbek in the Beqa'a Valley, Hezbollah opened its Jihad Museum, where examples of the organization's various weapons are displayed, including IDF weapons which fell into their hands. An investigation aired on al-Hadath TV revealed how Hezbollah's control of Beirut's international airport allows Iran to smuggle weapons into Lebanon.In Syria, an attack attributed to Israel was carried out at the Aleppo airport in the north of the country. According to the reports, military equipment from Iran intended for Hezbollah was targeted.

Spotlight on Global Jihad (August 24-30, 2023)

This week, the scope of ISIS’s activity around the world increased. The organization’s activity focused on Africa. In Israel an indictment was filed against a resident of Rahat for membership in ISIS and an attempt to enlist support for the organization.The Salafist-jihadi organization Ansar al-Tawhid in Syria claimed responsibility for detonating a booby-trapped tunnel under Syrian army positions on the outskirts of Idlib, killing at least 11 soldiers and wounding 20 others. Two Syrian soldiers were killed and six wounded while attempting to infiltrate the rebel enclave in Idlib. ISIS prisoners reportedly escaped from Ghuwayran Prison in Al-Hasakah. In Nigeria: ISIS carried out several attacks against Nigerian security forces in the northeast of the country. Clashes between Boko Haram and ISIS continued. A total of 49 women kidnapped by Boko Haram were released for ransom paid by their families.In Somalia Operatives of the Al-Qaeda-affiliated Al-Shabaab attacked three bases of Somali army special units and militias supporting the army. According to the organization, following the attack, it managed to retake several cities and towns in the region.

Spotlight on Iran (August 14-28, 2023)

Qods Force Commander said Israel is under difficult conditions both from within and without and is undergoing a process of decline and collapse. He said the “resistance front” had the upper hand. Senior advisor to the Iranian Supreme Leader, spoke by phone with the head of Hamas’s Political Bureau and the secretary general of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ), stressing Iran’s continued support for the Palestinians and praising the “resistance of the Palestinian people,” especially in the West Bank. As part of a joint operation by the ISA, the Israel Police, and the IDF, several Israeli civilians were detained in possession of Iranian-made IEDs and a large quantity of other weapons. A Syrian news channel reported on the ongoing increased activity of the IRGC and pro-Iranian militias in Deir ez-Zor in eastern Syria. Hezbollah Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah met with the advisor to the Iranian foreign minister and the Iranian ambassador to Beirut to discuss the latest developments in Lebanon and the region. Before that, the Iranian foreign minister’s advisor met with Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri.

Spotlight on Terrorism: Hezbollah, Lebanon and Syria (August 18-24, 2023)

This past week there were relatively few Lebanese provocations along the Israel-Lebanon border. Hezbollah's deputy secretary claimed Hezbollah was not interested in war, but was ready to engage in fighting quickly and effectively. Hassan Nasrallah, Hezbollah secretary general, met with senior Iranian officials to discuss the latest developments in Lebanon. An ISIS operative involved in carrying out the attack on the shrine of al-Sayyidah Zaynab in Damascus, was killed when Hezbollah attempted to apprehend him. Senior Lebanese government officials visited the offshore drilling rig in the Qana field, and the prime minister of Lebanon's interim government called it a historic day for Lebanon. A senior Hezbollah figure claimed the arrival of the rig had been made possible by the organization's "successful strategy."
