Fierce dispute between the Headquarters for the Liberation of Al-Sham and Al-Qaeda

Recently, harsh words have been exchanged between Al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri and the Headquarters for the Liberation of Al-Sham (formerly the Al-Nusra Front), indicating a widening rift between the two organizations.

Spotlight on Iran (November 26 – December 10, 2017)

Iran avoided issuing any official reaction to the strikes on the Iranian base in the area of the village of al-Kiswah. Israeli sources reported that the October 2017 visit of the chief of staff of the Iranian Armed Forces to Syria was unsuccessful. In Iraq too, Iran is acting to cement its influence in the era following the collapse of the Islamic State. Iran cast the blame on Saudi Arabia for the collapse of the alliance between the Houthi rebels in Yemen and former Yemeni President, Ali Abdullah Saleh, who was killed last week by the Houthis. Iran condemned the decision made by the President of the United States, Donald Trump, to declare Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, and called for a resumption of the armed struggle against Israel .

Spotlight on Global Jihad (November 30 – December 6, 2017)

On both sides of the Euphrates River in the area between Deir ez-Zor and Albukamal, searches after ISIS operatives who fled to the desert continue. This week, a meeting was held between senior Russian and Kurdish officers in the village of Al-Salihiyah, located midway between Al-Mayadeen and Albukamal. Even after the collapse of the Islamic State, ISIS continues to threaten Western countries and to call on its supporters to carry out attacks against the so-called infidels.

Spotlight on Global Jihad (November 23-29, 2017)

The main event of the week was a combined mass-killing attack carried out by ISIS in a Sufi mosque in the village of Al-Rawdah, some 45 km west of Al-Arish. In the ITIC’s assessment, ISIS’s Sinai Province and its other provinces abroad are highly motivated to carry out mass-killing attacks at the present time.

Takeover of Albukamal, the last stronghold of the Islamic State

On November 19, 2017, the Syrian army and the Shiite forces supporting it, with Russian air support, took over the city of Albukamal from ISIS. Albukamal was the last city remaining in the hands of the Islamic State in Syria. Its fall symbolized the end of the era of the Islamic State in Syria and the transformation of ISIS into a terror and guerrilla organization which does not have to defend a territorial framework.
