Spotlight on Terrorism: Hezbollah, Lebanon and Syria (July 14-20, 2023)

This past week the tension along the Israeli-Lebanese border continued. Hezbollah and its affiliates continued provocative actions along the border, including on the Israeli side. In an exceptional incident, IDF surveillance cameras installed along the border fence were ripped out. Hezbollah issued a video of its operatives simulating an attack on an Israeli post. Hassan Nasrallah, Hezbollah secretary general, gave a speech about Hezbollah's ideology, rife with anti-Semitic motifs and propaganda.The Lebanese government demanded Israel withdraw to the 1923 borders (agreed upon by the British and French mandates). The Lebanese government withdrew its conditions for renewing UNIFIL's mandate, after seeking to reduce the agency's powers in a way that would serve Hezbollah. The about-face was most likely the result of international pressure.

Spotlight on Global Jihad (July 13-19, 2023)

ISIS’s activity around the world continued to be relatively low this week. Most of it focused on Africa.The Iranian Revolutionary Guards branch in Syria and representatives of the Syrian army are working to recruit fighters trained by the Russian Wagner Group for operations against ISIS. Militants, apparently Al-Qaeda or ISIS operatives, attacked a convoy of Nigerien security forces close to the Niger-Mali-Burkina Faso tri-border area. A police officer and four civilians were killed and 19 people were wounded. The Somali government has declared an all-out war on the Al-Qaeda-affiliated Al-Shabaab. The British Home Secretary warned that ISIS and Al-Qaeda were planning attacks in the kingdom. Following the burning of the Quran in Sweden, elements affiliated with ISIS and Al-Qaeda call for attacking Christians in Europe. Elements affiliated with Al-Qaeda call on Muslims in Israel to attack civilians and soldiers.

Spotlight on Iran (July 6-20, 2023)

After the most recent IDF activity in Jenin, Iran praised the Palestinian "resistance" to Israel. A spokesman for the Iran foreign ministry called it "a new historic defeat" for Israel and the Iranian Tasnim News Agency, affiliated with the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC), claimed the results proved the strategic success of arming the West Bank. The Iranian media reported the death of an IRGC officer . According to the reports, he died of wounds received in an undated attack in Syria attributed to Israel. A Syrian opposition channel reported that in recent months the IRGC commander in eastern Syria had been working to implement directives received from senior Iranian officials instructing the pro-Iranian militias to gain full control of the Deir ez-Zor district in eastern Syria. The chief of staff of the Iranian armed forces warned the Iraqi government that unless it met the deadline it had promised for disarming the armed groups in the north of the country, Iran would renew its military activities against them.

Spotlight on Terrorism: Hezbollah, Lebanon and Syria (June 30 – July 13, 2023)

The Lebanese government, in coordination with Hezbollah, deliberated Israel's trespass into Lebanese territory in the tiny village of Ghajar instead of directly addressing Israel's demand for the removal of the tents Hezbollah erected on the Israeli side of the border (the Blue Line). In the meantime, Hezbollah continued its provocation along the border, which included firing an anti-tank missile from the Ghajar region, an attempt to vandalize the border fence, in which three civilians were injured, and an arson attempt. Hezbollah secretary general Hassan Nasrallah gave a speech for the 17th anniversary of the Second Lebanon War, relating to the current events along the border. The Lebanese presidential crisis continues with no resolution in the foreseeable future.The Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps' (IRGC) Qods Force and Hezbollah are strengthening their foothold in Syria.Information was revealed about an Iranian company's provision of missiles and UAVs to Hezbollah and Russia

Spotlight on Global Jihad (July 6-12, 2023)

This week, ISIS’s activity around the world continued to be relatively limited and focused on Africa. A senior ISIS operative was killed in Syria in a US drone attack in the Aleppo region. Russian fighter jets disrupted the activity of US drones operating against ISIS in several different incidents. A video from the Al-Hol camp documents training of the children of ISIS operatives. In Nigeria ISIS operatives killed around 50 Boko Haram operatives and their families. In Kenya Thirty operatives of the Al-Qaeda-affiliated Al-Shabaab were killed in exchanges of fire with Kenyan police Special Forces. The editorial of ISIS’s weekly Al-Naba refers to the burning of the Quran in Sweden by an Iraqi immigrant and calls for jihad against the “infidels” and for applying Islamic law (Sharia). According to a new study, Islamic terrorist organizations in Africa are transferring their social media activity to encrypted applications.

Spotlight on Global Jihad (June 29 – July 5, 2023)

This week, there was a further decline in ISIS’s activity around the world. The organization’s activity focused on Africa.ISA Director Ronen Bar revealed that since the beginning of 2022, the ISA has dealt with over 600 ISIS-related cases in Israel and that some of the operatives were just about to launch an attack. In Mozambique: ISIS operative attacked joint patrols of the Mozambican army and Southern African Development Community (SADC). In Somalia Al-Qaeda-affiliated Al-Shabaab held a parade attended by hundreds of its fighters. The forces of the African Coalition reduced their presence in the country.The battle for hearts and minds: The editorial of Al-Naba, ISIS’s weekly, deals with a jihad fighter’s reward. It stresses that the jihad fighter is rewarded both in this world and in the next. A senior leader in Al-Qaeda’s branch in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) calls on Muslims in “Palestine” to continue the jihad against the Jews. He also calls on Al-Qaeda operatives in North Africa and the Sahel to continue fighting against ISIS and on Al-Shabaab operatives to continue fighting against their enemies, i.e., in Somalia and its neighboring countries
