The ISIS-controlled enclave on the east bank of the Euphrates River continues to shrink. In the city of Manbij and its environs, there has been no significant change on the ground. In the Idlib area, the Headquarters for the Liberation of Al-Sham continues to establish its control, mainly at the expense of the Turkish-affiliated rebel organizations. The main event in ISIS’s provinces abroad this week was a multi-casualty attack during a ceremony in a cathedral on the island of Sulu in the southern Philippines.

On January 26, 2019, Hezbollah’s Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah gave a detailed interview to the Lebanese (pro-Hezbollah) Al-Mayadeen Channel. The interview was granted after several months during which Hassan Nasrallah refrained from giving interviews (this was especially conspicuous during Israel’s Operation Northern Shield, which recently ended).

Iran did not officially comment on the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) strikes in Syria on January 21. Prior to the latest confrontation between Iran and Israel, senior Iranian officials reiterated that Iran will continue to maintain its military presence in Syria. Iran Following the Latest Confrontation with Israel in the Syrian Arena

On January 21, 2019, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) bombed targets of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) and its foreign-operations wing, the Qods Force. Among the targets hit, according to a statement by IDF spokesperson, were weapons depots and military sites (one of them inside the Damascus International Airport), an Iranian intelligence site and a training camp operated by Iran. In addition, the IDF bombed Syrian air defense batteries that fired at IDF jets.

Abu Mohammad al-Julani, leader of the jihadi organization the Headquarters for the Liberation of Al-Sham (HLS), granted an interview to the Amjad Video Production Agency (affiliated with the HLS). The interview (a 23-minute video) was given as part of the Dialogue talk show and was entitled The Internal War and the Future of the Arena.
