Spotlight on Global Jihad (February 23 – March 1, 2023)

ISIS activity around the world moderately increased this week. In Syria: Ten civilians were killed and 12 others were wounded in the explosion of two mines in the Syrian Desert. In Afghanistan: Two ISIS operatives, one of them a senior Khorasan Province operative, were killed and another was detained in a counterterrorism operation. In Burkina Faso: ISIS claimed responsibility for an attack on the army of Burkina Faso that took place last week, saying that about 70 soldiers were killed.: The ISIS-affiliated Al-Battar media foundation calls for attacks against Christians in Western countries against the background of the burning of the Quran in Sweden.

Spotlight on Global Jihad (February 16-22, 2023)

This week saw a moderate increase in ISIS activity around the world. The center of activity was in Syria, ISIS operatives continued to attack civilians in the desert region. Close to 100 people were killed in recent attacks. In Iraq Twelve ISIS operatives were killed in a counterterrorism operation by the Iraqi Air Force on the outskirts of Baghdad. Taliban Special Forces operated against an ISIS hideout in Kabul. UN experts estimate that the successor of Ayman al-Zawahiri in the leadership of Al-Qaeda is Saif al-Adel, who guided some of the terrorists who carried out the 9/11 attacks.

Spotlight on Iran (February 9- 23, 2023)

The Commander of the Qods Force arrived in Syria to oversee the Iranian efforts to assist the survivors of the earthquake and held a series of meetings. On the night of February 18, Syrian state media reported on Israeli strikes in the area of Damascus. Iran’s official news agency reported, based on Iranian sources, that no Iranians were harmed in the strike. On February 14, U.S. forced stationed in Syria shot down an Iranian Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) flying over the Conoco Oil Field where U.S. forces are based in northeastern Syria. In early February, the deputy Iranian foreign minister paid a visit to Beirut, during which he met with senior Lebanese officials .

Spotlight on Terrorism : Hezbollah, Lebanon and Syria (February 3-16, 2023)

After the earthquake Hezbollah asserted its support for the people of Syria and Turkey and announced it had launched a campaign to help the victims. It accused the United States of preventing humanitarian assistance from reaching Syria.A French made-for-TV documentary exposed Hezbollah's involvement in drug trafficking and money laundering.February 12, 2023, marked the 15th anniversary of the death of Imad Mughniyeh. Many websites posted details about his life, activities and influence.An important Hamas figure visited Lebanon this past week and met with many Lebanese officials.

Spotlight on Global Jihad (February 9-15, 2023)

This week, there was a moderate increase in ISIS’s activity around the world. The centers of ISIS activity were Syria, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Mozambique., Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Office Vladimir Voronkov warned that the threat posed by ISIS remains high, especially in Africa. The editorial of ISIS’s Al-Naba weekly claimed that the earthquake is a message of warning and intimidation from Allah to the Muslims so that they strengthen their faith. In a video by Al-Zawahiri on the issue of “Palestine” he calls on Muslims around the world to help the Palestinians “liberate Palestine.”

Turkey arrested a squad of ISIS operatives who planned to carry out attacks against the Swedish and Dutch consulates and against Jewish and Christian targets in Istanbul, In Syria The US-led Global Coalition to fight ISIS, in collaboration with the Kurdish SDF forces, arrested 210 ISIS operatives in Al-Raqqah and Al-Tabqa In Africa: a summit conference was held in Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia, to coordinate activities against the Al-Qaeda-affiliated Al-Shabaab. The editorial of ISIS’s Al-Naba weekly called on the organization’s operatives and supporters to kill Jews around the world. At the same time, ISIS continues its campaign calling for the killing of Christians around the world, especially in Europe.
