Spotlight on Global Jihad (March 30 – April 3, 2023)

This week, ISIS continued its relatively moderate activity around the world. Its center of activity was in Nigeria. In Syria ISIS operatives attacked the headquarters of the Kurdish internal security forces in southwest Al-Hasakah. In Iraq ISIS operatives carried out a number of attacks against security forces. Five wanted ISIS operatives were arrested in the provinces of Baghdad and Salah al-Din. In Nigeria ISIS continued to carry out attacks mainly against security forces in the northeast of the country.

Spotlight on Iran (March 23 – April 2, 2023)

The Greek police detained two Pakistanis on suspicion of planning terrorist attacks against Israelis in Athens, directed by the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps' (IRGC) Qods Force. The Iranian embassy in Athens denied the reports, claiming their objective was to deflect attention from Israel's internal political crisis.Two IRGC officers were killed in an attack attributed to Israel which was carried out in the Damascus area. The IRGC threatened retribution.Iran condemned the March 24, 2023, American attack in eastern Syria which led to the deaths of pro-Iranian militia operatives. The Iranian authorities announced that World Jerusalem Day, usually held annually on the last Friday of Ramadan, would be held on April 14, 2023.

Spotlight on Global Jihad (March 23-29, 2023)

This week, ISIS continued its relatively moderate activity around the world. Its center of activity was in Nigeria. In Syria, ISIS operatives continue to attack people who collect truffle mushrooms in the desert region. In Nigeria ISIS continued to carry out attacks mainly against security forces in the northeast of the country. The Nigerian army continued its counterterrorism activity. Dozens of ISIS operatives were killed. In Afghanistan, at least six people were killed in an ISIS suicide attack near the Foreign Ministry building in Kabul.

Spotlight on Iran (March 9-23, 2023)

On March 9, 2023, Iranian Foreign Minister Amir Hossein Abdollahian arrived in Syria for a visit. The Iranian media reported that the commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps' (IRGC) Qods Force, arrived in Syria for a visit in the middle of March 2023. Khalil al-Haya, a member of Hamas' political bureau, interviewed by al-Jazeera TV, said Iran provided the Palestinian "resistance" [anti-Israeli terrorist activities] with political, financial and military aid, and had continued its support even after Hamas left Syria in 2013.

An organization named the Galilee Forces – Lone Wolves claimed responsibility for the terrorist attack at the Megiddo Junction

A terrorist network calling itself the Galilee Forces – Lone Wolves claimed responsibility for the IEDs attack at the Megiddo Junction on March 13, 2023. The claim of responsibility was published on the network's Telegram channel and had texts and videos under its name and logo. The claim of responsibility also relate to previous attacks allegedly carried out by the network's operatives. One was the shooting attack at the Mercaz Harav yeshiva in Jerusalem on March 6, 2008. Very little is known about the organization except for the few bits of information issued by the media.

Spotlight on Global Jihad (March 16-22, 2023)

This week there was a decrease in the scope of ISIS activity around the world. In Afghanistan An IED was activated against a vehicle carrying the governor of the Sherzad region.Two Syrian soldiers were killed by gunfire, apparently by ISIS operatives, in the Palmyra Desert. In The Democratic Republic of the Congo An ISIS attack was carried out for the first time in the area of the town of Lubero. According to ISIS, it is an expansion of the organization’s activity outside the areas of Beni and Ituri, in the northeast of Congo. According to the findings of the Global Terrorism Index summing up 2022, which was published in Australia, ISIS is the deadliest terrorist organization.
