The ISIS-controlled enclave on the east bank of the Euphrates River continues to shrink. In the city of Manbij and its environs, there has been no significant change on the ground. In the Idlib area, the Headquarters for the Liberation of Al-Sham continues to establish its control, mainly at the expense of the Turkish-affiliated rebel organizations. The main event in ISIS’s provinces abroad this week was a multi-casualty attack during a ceremony in a cathedral on the island of Sulu in the southern Philippines.

Muhammad Kazem Sawalha, a senior Hamas operative living in London, continues his participation in Hamas political activities for recently participated in a conference in Istanbul which opposed Mahmoud Abbas' dissolution of the Palestinian Legislative Council (against which Hamas is waging a political, propaganda and legal campaign).

The ISIS-controlled enclave on the east bank of the Euphrates River continues to shrink. The US and Kurdish forces have not yet completed their evacuation from the city of Manbij. In the Idlib area, the Headquarters for the Liberation of Al-Sham continues to consolidate its control, while weakening the Turkish-sponsored rebel organizations. Turkish President Erdoğan continues to threaten to carry out a military operation against the Kurds east of the Euphrates River

News of Terrorism and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict (January 16 – 22, 2019)

This past week there was a relatively low level of violence at the "return march" (about 14,000 participants). This past week a stabbing attack was prevented near an IDF check post south of Nablus. On February 3, 2019, an American law will go into effect making any recipient of American aid subject to the jurisdiction of its courts.

Another ISIS suicide bombing attack targets Americans and Kurds; ISIS threatens more attacks

On January 21, 2019, ISIS carried out a suicide bombing attack using a car bomb against a joint American-Kurdish patrol. The attack occurred near a roadblock west of the city of al-Shaddadi, south of al-Hasakeh (a region east of the Euphrates under Kurdish control).

ISIS Mass-Casualty Suicide Bombing Attack in Manbij and Its Significance (Initial Report)

On January 16, 2019, ISIS carried out a suicide bombing attack in the northeastern Syrian city of Manbij, apparently targeting an American army patrol which included Kurdish fighters. Nineteen people were killed, four Americans, five Kurds and ten civilians. The attack was carried out during the American-Kurdish withdrawal from the city.
