The Nakba Day march in Gaza City

The Nakba Day march in Gaza City

  • This past week there was a stabbing attack south of Nablus and a Palestinian threw a concrete block at an Israeli vehicle north of Ramallah. No casualties were reported.
  • The Israeli security forces continued intensive counterterrorism activities, detaining Palestinians suspected of terrorist activity and seizing weapons. During the activities a Border Police special forces fighter was killed. Two Palestinians were also killed in the riots, Shireen Abu Akleh, an al-Jazeera reporter, and Daoud Zubeidi, the brother of imprisoned Zakaria Zubeidi, was mortally wounded and later died. Their deaths caused Palestinians to riot against Israeli security forces. Following the death of Abu Akleh, Mahmoud Abbas instructed the Palestinian Authority (PA) legations around the world to erect mourning tents, and a campaign to vilify Israel was initiated. So far, the Palestinians have refused to cooperate with Israel in investigating the circumstances of her death.
  • Palestinians in Judea, Samaria and the Gaza Strip marked Nakba Day.[1] Despite calls for mass participation at the events, there was a relatively poor turnout. Most of the events were held far from the usual friction points between Palestinians and Israeli security forces. To honor the day Mahmoud Abbas announced that a series of books written before the Nakba would be reprinted to “strengthen the Palestinian legacy.”
  • Israel announced the reopening of the Erez Crossing after it had been closed for two weeks. Gazans will again be allowed to enter Israel for work.
Attacks and attempted attacks
  • On May 17, 2022, a Palestinian attempted to commit a stabbing attack near Hawwara, south of Nablus. Armed with a knife, he ran towards Israeli soldiers who were securing the site. They shot and wounded him. No Israeli casualties were reported (IDF spokesman, May 17, 2022).
  •  On May 13, 2022, an IDF surveillance unit in the Beit El region, north of Ramallah, identified a Palestinian throwing a concrete block at an Israeli vehicle, then trying to open the front passenger door. A Border Police fighter instituted procedures for detaining a suspect, which includes live fire. The Palestinian was wounded and taken for medical attention. A knife and a bottle of acid were found in his possession (IDF spokesman, May 13, 2022),
Terrorist attempts to open a car door after throwing a concrete block (IDF spokesman, May 13, 2022).

Terrorist attacks prevented
  • On the night of May 15, 2022, Border Police fighters at the Tapuah Junction stopped a suspicious vehicle. It was driven by a 22-year-old Palestinian from al-Bireh, east of Ramallah. An axe and suicide note were found in his possession. During interrogation he said he had been driving around for an hour looking for lone Israelis because he wanted to kill settlers in revenge for the killing of his friends.
  • On May 13, 2022, a Palestinian from Tulkarm was detained in Tzur Yitzhak, in central Israel. A knife and suicide note were found in his possession. During interrogation he confessed he was planning to carry out an attack in revenge of the death of his brother in a traffic accident near Tzur Yitzhak (Israel Police Force spokesman’s unit, May 14, 2022).
  • On May 11, 2022, a Palestinian fell upon Israeli policemen near the Cotton Gate in east Jerusalem, waving his hand and shouting, “Allahu akbar.” In response the police shot and wounded him, thinking he was a terrorist. No weapon was found in his possession (Israel Police Force spokesman’s unit, May 11, 2022).

Counterterrorism activities
  • This past week Israeli security forces continued intensive counterterrorism activities, detaining Palestinians wanted for terrorist activities and seizing illegal weapons. Most of the activities were held in the Jenin region, which has recently become a focal point for terrorist activity. Several dozen Palestinians were detained and weapons were confiscated (IDF spokesman, May 10-17, 2022).
  • On May 13, 2022, during Israeli security force activities near the village of Burqin, west of Jenin, a fighter from the Border Police special unit was killed. The forces were in the Burqin area to apprehend Mahmoud al-Dib’i, a Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) terrorist organization who was responsible for recent shooting attacks targeting IDF forces. His house was surrounded and attacked, and he surrendered and turned himself over to the forces. Several other wanted Palestinians were detained. During the activity dozens of Palestinians shot at the forces, and towards the end a Border Police special unit fighter was mortally wounded, later dying in the hospital.

  • The PIJ’s military-terrorist wing claimed responsibility for killing the Border Police fighter, boasting that its operatives had ambushed the Israeli forces, killing one (Jerusalem Brigades website, May 13, 2022). The ministry of health in Ramallah reported 13 Palestinians had been wounded in the exchanges of fire (qudsnet.com, April 13, 2022).
  •  During an Israeli security force activity in al-Bireh, east of Ramallah, a Palestinian was killed by IDF fire. The ministry of health in Ramallah reported he was Thaer Khalil Muslat al-Yazouri, 18, from al-Bireh (ministry of health in Ramallah Facebook page, May 11, 2022). According to other websites, he was 16 (Ma’an, Paldf Twitter account, May 11, 2022). Eye witnesses reported that he was unarmed but merely shouted “Allahu akbar” and fell upon a soldier (al-Quds al-Arabi, May 11, 2022). Mahmoud Abbas called al-Yazouri’s father and offered his condolences (Mahmoud Abbas’ Facebook page, May 11, 2022).

Palestinian reporter killed in Jenin
  • On May 11, 2022, during an Israeli security force activity in the Jenin refugee camp, Shireen Abu Akleh was killed. She was an American citizen and veteran al-Jazeera reporter in Israel and the PA territories. Ali Samoudi, a Palestinian reporter who was apparently nearby, was superficially wounded during the exchange of fire. Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said it was entirely possible that she had been killed by Palestinian gunfire (Naftali Bennett’s Twitter account, May 11, 2022). The IDF noted that there were large numbers of armed Palestinians at the site who were shooting non-stop at the Israeli forces. The IDF, he added, was investigating the event. The IDF called on the Palestinians to cooperate in the investigation (IDF spokesman, May 11, 2022).
  • On May 12, 2022, the commander of the IDF’s Central Command and the commander of the Commando Battalion presented their interim findings to the IDF’s chief of staff.[3] Their report showed that on the night of May 11, 2022, IDF fighters went to the Jenin area to detain Palestinians wanted of terrorist activities, and the soldiers were subjected to massive, uncontrolled fire as well as sniper fire. In addition, IEDs were thrown, hitting IDF vehicles near the fighters. In the morning, as the activity was winding down and the forces were leaving the area, the Palestinian reporter, who was in the combat zone, was hit in an exchange of fire. According to the IDF’s interim report, the source of the gunfire that hit and killed the reported could not be determined. The IDF stressed that a ballistic examination of the bullet could indicate the source of the gunfire (IDF spokesman, May 12, 2022).
  •  The death of Abu Akleh, who was well-known by Palestinians, turned her into a symbol and she was declared a “shaheed.” In view of her international standing, her death was widely reported in the Palestinian, Arab and international media. The Palestinians accused Israel of killing her. The Palestinians issued “findings” according to which only Israeli forces were operating where she was killed.

  • A press conference was held by the forensic medicine institute in Nablus where her body had been autopsied. According to the report issued, the findings of the preliminary examination indicated the cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head. No details of the bullet were given, and no evidence regarding who fired it or from what distance. The institute claimed the bullet was currently being examined to determine who fired it (Sawa, May 11, 2022).
  • Her death led to a wave of reactions:
    • Mahmoud Abbas’ office issued a statement claiming Israel was responsible for the “despicable crime,” which was a manifestation of its “daily policy.” It accused Israel of wounding and killing the reporter to obscure the “truth” and commit its “crimes” quietly (Wafa, May 11, 2022).
    • Mahmoud Abbas called Walid al-Omari, the director of al-Jazeera in Israel, to offer his condolences to al-Jazeera and the family. He said “Palestine” had lost a “knight of the truth” who had worked sincerely and faithfully to tell the world the Palestinian narrative and had documented “Israel’s [the occupation’s alleged] crimes against the Palestinian people” (Wafa, May 11, 2022).
    • PA Prime Minister Muhammad Shtayyeh claimed Israel was fully responsible for her death, adding that the Palestinians would conduct their own investigation and send a copy of the results to the International Criminal Court (ICC). He said they would not, under any circumstances, agree to let Israel conduct the investigation, which would be Palestinian, and they would give the results to the relevant countries, Qatar and the United States (al-Jazeera, May 12, 2022). Talking to the BBC, Shtayyeh said the Palestinian attorney general, in coordination with the Palestinian forensic science institute, would investigate all the information regarding the circumstances of her death and prepare a report that would be given to the ICC. He called on the international community to act against Israel’s actions, because it was impossible for them to remain silent (BBC, May 12, 2022).
    • Hussein al-Sheikh, PA minister of civilian affairs, accused the Israeli government of “murdering” Shireen Abu Akleh and said the matter would be referred to the ICC. He confirmed that Israel had asked to carry out a joint investigation and had asked for the bullet, but they rejected Israel’s offer and request. He claimed he had told the Israelis that the Palestinians would carry out an independent investigation and would update the family, the United States and Qatar about the results with “the highest transparency” (Hussein al-Sheikh’s Twitter account, May 12, 2022).
    • Isma’il Haniyeh, head of Hamas’ political bureau, and Khaled Mashaal, a member of Hamas’ political bureau and head of the “external” Hamas leadership, called al-Jazeera’s editorial offices to offer their condolences on Abu Akleh’s “martyr’s death.” Haniyeh praised her importance for the “victory of the truth” and claimed Palestinian journalists would follow her path (Hamas website, May 11, 2022).
    • The Izz al-Din Qassam Brigades, Hamas’ military-terrorist wing, said in a statement that it was “an Israeli custom” to attack journalists as part of its indefatigable, desperate effort to hide its crimes and silence the “voice of truth” (Izz al-Din Qassam Brigades website, May 11, 2022).
    • Yahya al-Sinwar, head of the Hamas political bureau in the Gaza Strip, paid a visit to the al-Jazeera offices to offer his condolences. He said the agency that in May 2021 [Operation Guardian of the Walls] had given the order to attack the al-Jalaa Tower in Gaza, where al-Jazeera had its offices, was the same agency that gave the order to “assassinate” Shireen Abu Akleh (Palinfo Twitter account, May 14, 2022).

    • The Jerusalem Brigades, the PIJ’s military-terrorist wing, said IDF forces had entered the Jenin refugee camp but had been exposed by Jerusalem Brigades operatives who shot at them and threw IEDs. After the IDF forces’ mission had “failed” they decided to take revenge on the Palestinian reporters [who were there at the time] and killed Shireen Abu Akleh and wounded another reporter (Jerusalem Brigades’ Telegram channel, May 11, 2022).
  • On May 12, 2022, the PA held a formal memorial service for Abu Akleh in the Muqata’a in Ramallah. Thousands of people attended, headed by Mahmoud Abbas, senior PA figures and clerics. A military convoy carried her coffin, which was wrapped in the Palestinian flag. After the service the coffin was transferred to east Jerusalem. Mahmoud Abbas gave a speech where he said Israel was fully responsible for her death. He said they opposed conducting a joint investigation with Israel because Israel had committed the crime. He also said they intended to lodge a complaint with the ICC (al-Jazeera, May 12, 2022).
  • On May 13, 2022, a funeral was held for Abu Akleh in east Jerusalem, attended by thousands of Palestinians. When the coffin was taken from the French Hospital in east Jerusalem the Israeli police prevented it from being carried by Palestinians on foot through the streets, since no previous agreement had been made. Riots broke out and objects were thrown at the police. The police were photographed by international media outlets beating Palestinians with clubs, including those carrying the body.

  • On May 14, 2022, Mahmoud Abbas again stated that the Palestinians agreed to international involvement in the investigation of Shireen Abu Akleh’s death, but opposed Israeli involvement. Muhammad al-Shalaldeh, PA minister of justice, stated that once the report of the investigation had been completed it would be given to the ICC. He said [her death] had been a “deliberate assassination,” which was a war crime, and an investigative commission had to be appointed, whether or not Israel admitted its crime. He claimed [without offering proof] the weapon used to shoot her was Israeli.
Palestinian campaign for international condemnation of Israel
  • Following Shireen Abu Akleh’s death, Dr. Ahmed al-Dayak, senior political advisor to the Palestinian foreign minister, said that in coordination with Mahmoud Abbas, Muhammad Shtayyeh and the Palestinian foreign minister, the Palestinian legations abroad had erected mourning tents which would remain open for three days. He said Palestinian representatives around the world had initiated a campaign to smear and condemn Israel, aimed at the foreign ministries of the various countries. They would provide information about her death, assign full responsibility to Israel and demand those responsible be tried in court (PA foreign ministry website, May 16, 2022).
Death of Daoud Zubeidi
  • On May 15, 2022, Daoud Zubeidi died, after having been mortally wounded during the Israeli security force activity in Wadi Burqin. He was the brother of Zakaria Zubeidi, one of the six prisoners who escaped from the Gilboa Prison and the former Jenin commander of the al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigade. Daoud Zubeidi was 43 and lived in the Jenin refugee camp. In the past he spent 12 years in an Israeli prison (Ma’an, Safa, May 15, 2022). In January 2022 he tweeted, “To be alive, you should live like a lion, and to die, you should die like a hero. By Allah, I love death the way you love your places of employment (‘Ashaq al-Qassam Twitter account, May 15, 2022).

  • Following the announcement of his death, Fatah’s military-terrorist wing in Jenin called for him to be avenged with “a revenge fitting his senior rank” [in the PA’s security forces]. It called for a day of mourning, a general commercial strike and for the educational institutions to declare a day of rage. Dozens of masked, armed Palestinians had a simulated funeral for him in Jenin near his house [his body is being held by Israel]. The event was attended by Fathi Hazem, father of the terrorist who carried out the shooting attack in Tel Aviv. He said the blood of shaheeds would not stop flowing until al-Aqsa mosque had been “liberated” (QudsN Twitter account, May 15, 2022).

  • Mahmoud Abbas spoke with Yahya Zubeidi, Daoud Zubeidi’s brother, offered his condolences to the family and praised the “legacy of struggle” of the Zubeidi family, which began in 2002 (Mahmoud Abbas’ Facebook page, May 16, 2022). Muhammad Shtayyeh offered his condolences to the Zubeidi family via a post on his Facebook page on May 15, 2022.
  • The PA foreign ministry condemned what it claimed was “the crime of killing shaheed Daoud Zubeidi.” The ministry assigned responsibility for the “execution” to Israel. It also said it was the direct outcome of the instructions from the Israeli leadership, which takes pride in allowing its soldiers to act without limitations (PA foreign ministry Facebook page, May 15, 2022).
  • Fatah’s Revolutionary Council issued a statement condemning Israel, calling it another in the series of Israel’s “crimes” against the Palestinian people, proved Israel was a fascist country [sic] and that its policy was to carry out executions (Wafa, May 16, 2022).
  • Hamas said in a statement that the blood of the shaheeds and of every Palestinian casualty fueled the ongoing “struggle” against Israel (Hamas Telegram channel, May 15, 2022). Zaher Jabarin, a member of Hamas’ political bureau, offered his condolences and called for an escalation [of terrorist attacks]. He praised the Jenin refugee camp, calling it a reservoir of the revolution and a hothouse of “resistance” [i.e., Palestinian terrorism] (Hamas website, May 15, 2022).
  • The PIJ accused Israel of the “assassination” of Daoud Zubeidi and called on all Palestinians not to ignore it, but to respond with jihad and “resistance” [i.e., terrorist attacks against Israel]. They also praised the Jenin refugee camp, which they claimed was “a unique model of unity for sacrifice and the struggle against the occupation” (Paltoday, May 15, 2022).

Riots during a funeral in east Jerusalem
  • Walid Sharif, from Beit Hanina, who was wounded a month ago while participating, masked and throwing rocks, in a riot on the Temple Mount, fell as he was running away. He was hospitalized and later died. A funeral was held for him in east Jerusalem on the evening of May 16, 2022, and passed close to al-Aqsa mosque. During the funeral hundreds of Palestinians rioted against Israeli police forces. They chanted anti-Israeli slogans, waved Palestinian flags and confronted Israeli security forces. The riots spread to several other locations in east Jerusalem, including the Muslim cemetery on Salah al-Din Street and the Abu Tor neighborhood.
  • Large Israeli police and Border Police forces employed riot control measures to overcome the rioters, who were throwing rocks, concrete blocks, heaving objects and bottles. Six police were wounded, two of them requiring medical attention. Several passersby were injured and vehicles were damaged. The police detained five Palestinians who sped their vehicle towards Border Police fighters and hit a passerby (Israel Police Force spokesman’s unit, May 16, 2022).
  • According to Palestinian medical reports, 70 Palestinians were wounded in the riots. The Palestinian media reported that Israeli police attacked people attending the funeral. The PA and Hamas issued condemnations.
Nakba Day
  • On May 14, 2022, the eve of Nakba Day, the Hamas-affiliated media outlets increased their broadcasts of Hamas propaganda. The Palestinians were again asked to go en masse to al-Aqsa mosque. There was no particular Palestinian response to the calls and participation was relatively poor. Most of the events passed without incident. Most of them were held far from friction points, with the exception of a few, such as the northern entrance to al-Bireh, where it was reported that about 40 Palestinians were injured in clashes with the Israeli security forces (Shehab Twitter account, May 15, 2022).

  •   On Nakba Day sirens were sounded for 74 seconds throughout Judea and Samaria. “Educational and cultural” activities were held, as were demonstrations and marches; the PA and Fatah leaderships attended some of the events. The main rally was held in Ramallah.

  • In the Gaza Strip public events were held in city centers and schools, far from the security fence along the Israeli border. At the main rally signs were held calling for the realization of the so-called “right of return” and stressing Jerusalem was the capital of “Palestine.”
  • On May 12, 2022, a rally was held east of Gaza City for Nakba Day, attended by several hundred Gazans. Speeches were given by members of the “national committee” who said it was necessary to confront Israel. They also condemned the threats on the life of Yahya al-Sinwar and praised the conduct of Israeli Arabs during Operation Guardian of the Walls (Palinfo, May 12, 2022). Hamas said in a Nakba Day statement that the “resistance,” especially the “armed resistance,” was the [correct] way to “struggle” against Israel (headquarters, May 15, 2022).

Preserving the legacy of the Nakba and Palestinian identity
  •  After Mahmoud Abbas received 50 books written before the Nakba and reprinted, he decreed a “national project” for reprinting books as a way of preserving the “Palestinian national legacy and identity,” and proving their presence in “Palestine.” He handwrote an introduction to the first books, stressing the importance of the project and its “rich literary material” which he said would contribute to strengthening Palestinian identity. ‘Atef Abu Sayif, the Palestinian minister of culture, claimed about 1,400 books had been published before the Nakba (Wafa, May 14, 2022).

Prevention of the smuggling of weapons components to the Gaza Strip
  • On April 8, 2022, the Israeli security forces prevented components for the manufacture of weapons from being smuggled via the sea into the Gaza Strip for the terrorist organizations. Following intelligence information, three Gazans involved in the smuggling were detained after they left the Gaza marina on the night of April 8, 2022 and sailed along the coast in the direction of Egypt. When they were about the cross the border into Egyptian territorial waters they were halted by IDF forces, who took control of their boat, detained them and took them for interrogation. They were Mahmoud Aziz Bakr, who was detained two years ago after a failed attempt to smuggle weapons for Hamas, was imprisoned in Israel for a year and has been involved in smuggling since his release; Ahmed Isma’il Fasih and Muhammad Nehad Silawi, who were fishermen-smugglers. Interrogation of the three revealed that they had been sent by and coordinated with Hamas to smuggle contraband articles for manufacturing weapons into the Gaza Strip (IDF spokesman, May 11, 2022).

Erez Crossing reopened
  • After two weeks during which the Erez Crossing was closed and after a new security assessment had been made, the Israeli Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) decided to reopen it on May 15, 2022, to allow Gazan workers to enter Israel. He said opening the crossing depended on an assessment of the security situation and the preservation of security stability (COGAT website, May 14, 2022).
Hamas reaction to the publication of the name of the Israeli officer killed in the Gaza Strip in 2018
  • On May 15, 2022, in an exceptional step, Israel issued the name and picture of the IDF officer killed during a special operation in Khan Yunis, southern Gaza Strip, in 2018. Hamas spokesman Hazem Qassem said Hamas’ military wing had revealed his name in November 2018, before Israel announced his death. He claimed the Israeli announcement confirmed the military wing’s intelligence capability. He also claimed the military wing had more information about the operation which proved the “resistance” could defeat Israel’s special units (Hazem Qassem’s Telegram channel, May 15, 2022).
